Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 2026
1. Overview
Smokecraft (“we,” “our,” or “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have in connection with the Smokecraft mobile application (the “App”) and associated website at smokecraft.app (the “Site”).
Smokecraft is a BBQ cook orchestrator app. By design, most data you generate — cook sessions, temperature logs, phase history — never leaves your device. We are not a data business. We collect the minimum necessary to operate the App and communicate with you.
This policy covers both the App and the Site. Where the practices differ, we note them specifically.
2. Information We Collect
Information you provide directly:
- Email address — if you subscribe to BBQ tips via the Site. This is voluntary and the only personal information we collect on the Site.
- Traeger credentials — if you connect a Traeger grill, the App stores your Traeger account credentials locally on your device to authenticate with Traeger’s cloud API. We do not transmit these credentials to our servers.
Information collected automatically:
- Cook session data — temperatures, timestamps, phase logs, meat type, and cook settings. Stored locally on your device and, if you have enabled iCloud Drive, in your personal iCloud account. We cannot access this data.
- App diagnostics — crash reports and basic usage statistics, collected through Apple’s opt-in analytics framework (Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements on your device). We receive only anonymized, aggregated data through this channel.
- Location data — approximate location is used by Apple WeatherKit to retrieve weather conditions for your cook area. Location data is processed by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy and is not transmitted to Smokecraft’s servers. Location access is requested only when you start a cook and can be revoked at any time in iOS Settings.
Information we do not collect:
- We do not collect advertising identifiers (IDFA).
- We do not use third-party analytics SDKs.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with advertisers.
- We do not access your contacts, photos, camera, or microphone.
3. Cook Session Data and Local Storage
All cook session data — including temperature readings, phase transitions, probe logs, and cook summaries — is stored exclusively on your device using Apple’s Core Data framework. This data is yours.
iCloud sync (optional): If you have iCloud Drive enabled for Smokecraft in your iOS Settings, cook data will sync across your devices via iCloud. This data is stored in your personal iCloud account and is subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy. Smokecraft has no access to your iCloud data.
Deleting your data: You can delete all cook history from within the App. Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data. If iCloud sync is enabled, you can remove iCloud data via iOS Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Smokecraft.
4. Hardware Integrations — Traeger and MEATER
Traeger WiFi grills: When you connect a Traeger grill, the App communicates directly with Traeger’s cloud API using your Traeger account credentials. This includes retrieving grill status (pit temperature, pellet level, connection state) and, in supported versions, sending set-point commands.
All communication with Traeger’s API occurs between your device and Traeger’s servers. Smokecraft does not proxy or log these API calls, and does not store your Traeger credentials on our servers. Your use of Traeger integration is also subject to Traeger’s own Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
MEATER wireless probes: MEATER integration uses your device’s Bluetooth hardware to communicate directly with your MEATER probe. No data is transmitted over the internet as part of the MEATER integration. Temperature readings are captured locally and written to your cook session log on-device.
Smokecraft does not use the MEATER SDK or MEATER’s cloud services. All MEATER communication is via native CoreBluetooth.
5. WeatherKit and Location
Smokecraft uses Apple WeatherKit to retrieve current weather conditions — temperature, humidity, wind speed — relevant to your cook location. This information is used to generate pre-cook advisories (e.g., high humidity warnings about extended stall phases).
WeatherKit requires approximate location access. Location data is processed by Apple’s WeatherKit service under Apple’s Privacy Policy and is not transmitted to Smokecraft’s servers. Location is accessed only when you initiate a cook, and is not stored by the App after the weather lookup completes.
You can deny or revoke location access at any time via iOS Settings → Smokecraft → Location. If location access is denied, WeatherKit advisories will not be available, but all other App features will function normally.
6. Push Notifications and Live Activities
The App uses Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) to deliver overnight cook alerts — for example, if your Traeger pit temperature drifts outside your target range while you are asleep.
Push notification tokens are device-specific identifiers issued by Apple. Smokecraft stores your APNS token temporarily to send you relevant alerts. This token does not identify you personally and is rotated by Apple periodically. We do not use push tokens for advertising or share them with third parties.
The App also uses iOS Live Activities to display your cook status on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. Live Activity data is rendered on-device and is not transmitted to Smokecraft’s servers.
You can manage notification permissions at any time in iOS Settings → Smokecraft → Notifications.
7. Email Communications and the Website
If you subscribe to BBQ tips or Smokecraft updates on the Site, we collect your email address. We use your email address solely to send you the communications you requested.
Email addresses collected on the Site are stored using Sapphire Signal, a contact management service. Your email address is not shared with third parties for advertising purposes. You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email we send, or by emailing privacy@smokecraft.app.
The Site does not use tracking cookies, advertising pixels, or third-party analytics scripts. We do not use Google Analytics or similar services.
9. Data Retention and Deletion
Cook data: Stored on your device indefinitely until you delete it or uninstall the App. We have no copies.
Email addresses (Site): Retained as long as you are subscribed. On unsubscribe, your email is marked inactive within 30 days and removed from all active mailing lists. To request complete deletion, email privacy@smokecraft.app and we will remove your record within 30 days.
APNS tokens: Retained while you have notifications enabled. Automatically invalidated by Apple when you disable notifications or uninstall the App.
Crash/diagnostic data: Anonymized and aggregated. No individual retention applies.
10. Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we do hold. Communications between the App and external APIs (Traeger, Apple WeatherKit) are encrypted using TLS. Credentials stored locally on your device are stored in the iOS Keychain, which is hardware- protected on devices with a Secure Enclave.
However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. We encourage you to use a strong device passcode and keep your iOS software up to date.
11. Children's Privacy
Smokecraft is not directed to children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13, please contact us at privacy@smokecraft.app and we will delete it promptly.
12. California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):
- Right to Know: You may request information about the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you.
- Right to Delete: You may request deletion of personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
- Right to Opt Out of Sale: We do not sell personal information. You do not need to opt out.
- Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising your CCPA rights.
To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@smokecraft.app. We will respond to verifiable requests within 45 days.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you through the App or by email.
We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the App or Site after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
